Barre Images: Granite Sheds and Labor Hall

Barre is a small very working class city in central Vermont. It has kind of fallen on hard times but the granite industry remains active even as tastes change and competition from abroad threatens the domestic stone cutting industry. Unlike many places today it is a ungentrified place with a lot of history that is still evident without having to look too hard, it would be interesting to poke around the archives of the city library, they recount the waves of immigration in the city and what has changed (and has not) over time.

These photos, which don't have any particular merit, were taken on a very gloomy Sunday morning, shades of gray from sky and rock.
